Building on our commitment to AI-assisted development, Firebase Studio now uses Gemini 2.5 Pro to help you build, iterate, and ship faster than ever before.
Since we first introduced Project IDX, our vision has been to create a seamless, intelligent, and collaborative workspace that empowers developers to bring their ideas to life. This journey evolved into Firebase Studio, a cloud-based, agentic development environment designed to accelerate the entire application lifecycle. We’ve been dedicated to integrating powerful AI capabilities directly into your workflow, from AI-powered NextJS App prototyping experience to versatile Agent modes and Agentic templates. Now, we’re ready to announce a major improvement in Firebase studio’s capabilities.
Using Gemini 2.5 Pro in Firebase Studio
We are excited to share that the built-in model powering Firebase Studio is now Gemini 2.5 Pro, one of Google’s most powerful and capable models. This means that all Firebase Studio users have access to Gemini 2.5 Pro by default, and a Gemini API key is no longer required to use it. This upgrade significantly enhances Firebase Studio’s ability to understand complex problems, generate high-quality code, and assist you in more intuitive and powerful ways.
So what does it all mean?
Gemini 2.5 Pro brings a suite of powerful capabilities to Firebase Studio:
-
Enhanced reasoning and logic: This model excels at understanding and solving complex problems. This translates to better problem-solving abilities, more sophisticated code generation, and a deeper understanding of your high-level goals.
-
Advanced coding capabilities: Gemini 2.5 Pro with its large context size has been optimized for a wide range of coding tasks, from generating visually compelling web apps to transforming and editing existing code.
-
Native multimodality: Firebase Studio continues to support multimodal prompts, allowing you to use text, images, and even drawings to guide the AI in prototyping and building your applications.
By pairing the built-in model with Agent modes, AI Rules, and other customizations, you can optimize your workflows to suit your needs and work faster.
Tips to build apps faster
- Provide an image: One of the fastest ways to build your app’s UI is to provide the model with images or a screenshot of what you’d like. As you can see in the example below, the agent then transforms that image input into fully working Vue.js code.
- Use the drawing tool: When it appears the agent is not ‘getting’ the right context or doing the right thing, think about how else you can give it more context and use various available tools - like the drawing tool. In the example below, the agent required more guidance to get the textbox border animation correct - so we utilized the drawing tool to show what the different states looked like and the agent got the solution right away!
- Iterate on a component: If the agent is not able to isolate UI into components by default, you can simply ask “Now please isolate the textbox into its own component.” , and the agent figures out where the component should be located, and successfully isolates the component for future reusability.
Firebase Studio helps you fully customize your development environment and extend Gemini’s ability to accelerate your development for any framework of your choice.
